Often exceptions are detected by comparison to previous data values. So analysis is often more valuable if data is being compared to a similar previous period or to a budget. The exception can then be defined to be any value that has a significant departure (it might be a percentage) from the target goal or objective. Analysis can be color flagged (such as red) on a report whenever a value is outside the pre-determined acceptable deviation, providing an easy way to detect when immediate attention is required.
