BIAnalytix Tip Summary:  Media Many-to-Many Relationships

In the real world, Media business data includes a number of Many-to-Many relationships that require both the details and the totals to be presented accurately by the Business Intelligence system. Doing this is not a simple summation. Examples of Media specific Many-to-Many relationships include 1) the way selling units may overlap the same physical time period in a log, or 2) the many calculated demographics over the Nielsen audience data, or 3) the multiple sales executives who may work on the same contract. In all of these cases the data reported (such as revenue or audience) by each of these dimensions individually will accumulate to more than the total because of the necessity for multiple reporting of the common amounts.

Business Intelligence OLAP Cube and presentation tools must be chosen carefully so that they correctly and simply support these media many-to-many relationships. With advanced BI tools, the integrity of the individual amounts are maintained, and at the same time, the overall totals are presented accurately, even though these totals will not equal the sum of the individual amounts.
